I have two pieces (one brand new) up at Klaus Gallery as part of a series of online shows curated by Duncan Malashock. Duncan wrote a nice statement focusing on the new piece, "Scroll", that I'm about to blockquote below.

The rise of online social networking and the “participatory web” of Web 2.0 has created an atmosphere where participation in online communities is not only facilitated, but actively encouraged. To increase usage of their products, social networking sites attempt to engage users by enlisting algorithms that attempt to predict their relationships to their friends, their obligations, and their own beliefs. These content suggestion engines have met with some success, but their presumptuousness is often a source of user frustration. And as users interact with each other simultaneously with interfaces online, the social side-effects of the human-machine interface, which began with “does not compute” in the 1960s, have developed into a matrix of political nuance.
Arend deGruyter-Helfer’s new work uses found text from interactions online, displacing them from the social network environment and recasting them into a long list on a scrollable interface, a gesture towards user impatience. In “Scroll”, deGruyter-Helfer has compiled a surprising and humorous litany of encounters with the unintended meanings, trivial narrations, misplaced censorship, intolerance of solitude, and stubborn quantification of human factors which make up the new lingua franca of the social web.

Last week Aylor and Jessica came out out for a visit and we stopped by the newly established Island Smokes in the lower east side to get a $3 pack of cigarettes. Through some kind of legal loophole the shop is able to sell cigarettes at a deep discount. The catch or rather the funnest part is you have to make them yourself. We walked in and the woman working asked us what type of cigarettes we smoke.. um American Spirits. She handed us each a cigarette to sample, an exclusive shop blend. Explaining to us that our beloved natural American Spirits use carpet glue in their papers to slow down the burn. Alternately, Island Smokes offers just paper and tobacco - that's it - no bad stuff. The woman than demonstrated how to use the machine and Aylor and Jessica rolled their 20 cigs as I ecstatically snapped photos and sampled their smokes.

My friend Anthony introduced me to FAVs. In Ghana there is a tradition of celebrating the life of the recently departed by seeing off the dead in a 'Fantastic Afterlife Vehicle,' a FAV. The coffin is representative of the life led by its occupant such as an object in the form of ones occupation or possibly ones interests. All in all they are a celebration of the virtues and the life force of the person's existence. What a beautiful way to be remembered.

The above coffin belongs to the artist Emanuel Okine who was a master teacher of movie poster painting. The coffin was sculpted by Nii Anum and painted by D.A. Jasper one of Okine's students. The image is from the book: Extreme Canvas: Movie Poster Paintings from Ghana by Ernie Wolfe III

The members of Superstudio (previous post) eventually parted ways and notably one of their founding members Adolfo Natalini went on to design and execute actual buildings. This was a major departure from his radical past with the group which emphasized the power of communication and ideas over practice. His later work has been critiqued for abandoning these early revolutionary ideals to practice a self-described 'anti-modern' aesthetic. To me this seems a natural evolution from a youthful protest to responsible action.

"Today, architecture has been homogenized by a cynical and useless experimentalism: the only possible reaction is a return to order or, better, tradition (the consolidated patrimony of successful experiments). I wish to counter the utopia of globalization with harsh local realities and a great longing for beauty." - Adolfo Natalini

I showed Natalini's work to my architect grandfather and devoted follower of modernism. His response, "that's not anti-modern, it's advanced Nazi." Ha. I can see the validity in his comparison, somehow both parties interest in order and tradition has met somewhere in-between their polar philosophical extremes.

Life without Objects

Superstudio was an architecture group founded in Italy (1966-1978) by Natalini, Torrelado di Francia, Alessandro, Roberto Magris and Piero Frassinelli. Coming out of post-war Italy the group rejected the revivalist reconstruction of their cities. New buildings emerged with poor construction and unjust social divisions. Superstudio critiqued this environment by "highjacking the language of architecture" through photo-montage, collage, drawings, and videos. Most of their designs were never built as they were impossible and more effective as satirical and playful solutions to the consumerism of design.

Here Supersudio's reflective architecture proposes a reversal of the consumerist action of tourism by encasing the Golden Gate bridge in a mirrored cube.

"Continuous Monument" is a photo-collage series in which a gridded superstructure extends across the surface of the world.

The group designed a collection of archetypal furniture in white laminate printed with a continuous grid. The intent of the black on white grid was to create a neutral surface allowing these everyday objects to take background to our lives.

The Foxfire project began in 1966 in Eliot Wigginton's English class at the Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Rabun County, Georgia. Wiggington's students interviewed their elder family members and neighbors about traditional Appalachian crafts, culture, folklore, and history. The product was the Foxfire magazine and the subsequent Foxfire books. Some of my favorite articles are "Moonshining as a Fine Art", "Rope, Straw, and Feathers are to Sleep on", and "Snake Lore".

The magazine and books are great but what's really so fascinating is that this simple English assignment turned into a multimedia enterprise. After the commercial success of the Foxfire books, the students used some of their royalty money to buy land in Mountain City, Georgia to start a heritage museum of homes, crafts, artifacts, and tools. The students collected and preserved over twenty log cabins, a gristmill, a blacksmith's shop, and the Zuraw Wagon - the only existing wagon known to be used on the Trail of Tears.

Educators and Foxfire staff studied and expanded on the success of the original Wiggington classroom and came up with the Foxfire Core Practices for Education, the basis for the Foxfire Approach to Teaching and Learning. The Core Practices emphasize the role of the student as an active learner, teacher, and evaluator in their own education. Quite simply, the Approach empowers students to use their local community as a resource for learning and to create an audience outside of their classroom and community. According the the Foxfire site, there are Foxfire-trained teachers in 38 states.

The Coral Castle was built by Latvian immigrant Edward Leedskalnin in Homestead, Florida. Leedskalnin claimed to had known "the secrets of the pyramids" and was therefore able to lift several tons of limestone made from coral using some form of magnetic propulsion. He built the castle as a monument to his lost love, his 16-year-old fiancee Agnes Scuffs in Latvia who left him just days before the wedding. He worked in secret and devoted his life to the project from 1920 to his death in 1951.

Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown coined the terms "Duck" and "Decorated Shed" as two ways of explaining the use of symbolism in architecture. The Duck refers to the building as symbol and the Decorated Shed a box with applied symbols. In their own work they favored the Decorated Shed as a model.

A collection of love letters from Charles Schultz to Tracey Claudius. "During the 70s, Schulz briefly dated Claudius, and the famed cartoonist wrote nearly one hundred poignant and heartfelt letters to her throughout their time together."

The letters were found and exhibited by Tracey's daughter Katie Leeman.

Read/Write attempts to capture and translate the spirit of their year and a half long online exhibition dating October 2009 - February 2011.

WV: I don't like the word. As a matter of fact, I call it "red architecture," but then people immediately think of communism. But nature is actually red, it's rejecting green. The only reason you see green is because every other color in nature is being accepted, and green is the one that is being rejected. So the color of nature is in the flowers, that's what nature looks like: it's red.

Plaid Collection by Pia Howell of Colorgram. Pia creates her images in the darkroom in some sort of light exposing alchemy. This results in a very printerly, textural image in which the quality of the hand really comes through. To see these prints in real life is a completely different experience.

On Saturday, Nov 6th at noon in The Classroom join Golden Age for A Cultural Reader, a series of micro-lectures from Maxwell G. Graham, Javelin, Hanne Mugaas, William Pym, Tim Ridlen, and Bailey Salisbury. In conjunction with the event, GA will be publishing a fanzine containing images, footnotes and anything else that didn't make it into those seven minutes.

I will be reading a short story while presenting original super 8 footage of the building of a 1970's log house.

The Museum Of Useful Things

While visiting Cambridge, MA this weekend I stopped into a shop in Harvard Square called Black Ink. It was a nice design shop full of oddments and featured its own "line" of objects under the name The Museum of Useful Things, basically a curated collection of standard useful objects that are not readily available because they are either considered outdated, or are mainly used in industry. Pictured above is the 4-way rubberband and a bookholder.

While out west I had the privilege of visiting Important Projects; a small art space on the upper level of a bay area bungalow style home. I was most interested in the space's newly established ritual of hand painted show signs found through out the house. I visited the gallery to see Michael Hunter's Losers and then spent a lovely afternoon in the sculpture garden.

Nance Klehm will lead a small group on a two hour Urbanforage of Chicago’s Gold Coast. On this informal guided walk through the spontaneous and cultivated vegetation of the urbanscape, participants will learn to identify plants, hear their botanical histories and stories of their use by animals and humans, and share antidotes of specific experiences with these plants. The Urbanforage will begin in the garden of the Graham Foundation’s Madlener House, where participants are invited to sample an herbal beverage made by the artist.

On Wednesday Sept. 8th the new moon landed in my 3rd house marking the unveiling of two pending projects. With Mercury coming out of retrograde in two days and the presence of fall among us I can feel that we (www) are reaching a new stage of productivity. Stay tuned.

My friends Parker and Caitlin asked me to participate in a revolving web exhibition for their curatorial project JstChillin. This will culminate in a final show, a physical exhibition including all participants in a flow of energy on a groundless site (in San Francisco!)
